My sister did a fantastic thing on her recent trip to Italy. On several days of her 2-week trip, she and her husband posted pictures and notes about their journey on their Facebook pages. It was great to tour the Vatican Museum, explore Pompeii, and stroll the Tuscan hills with them. It was almost as good as stowing away in their suitcases.
Now, as a mom with three kids and all the attention, time and paraphalia that entails, would I realistically be able to to match that on my next vacation? I’m not so sure, but maybe someday. It was fun enough following hers that I might try it myself sometime.

oh, goodness I’d love to see Pompeii! I love browsing through Facebook albums because I get a chance to go traveling without the jetlag or the expenses. I’m jet lagged at the moment 😦

I’ve thought about this too, Melissa. Again, though not a mother, I wonder how realistic it is. I’m planning (and praying) on going with the group from the parish to Medjugorje in the fall, at the same time my parents are going to Rome for the canonization of Jeanne Jugan (foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor) and several others (including Father Damien of Molokai). As much as I’d like to share my trip (and have my parents share theirs) I wonder really, if it’s something we can do…..The next best thing is to keep a detailed journal, and good photos and post ’em when I return.
Well, they did take their laptop just for the purpose, so that’s something extra to carry and worry about. What about your iTouch? You could experiment before you go. It might not be as difficult as it seems.
Posting our pictures and journals wasn’t the easiest thing to do. My husband had to trek that laptop in his backpack along with all his other carry on items through airports and train stations. We booked B&B’s with wireless, and he brought a cable lock for security in the rooms. We made an effort to post everyday, and some days I was worn out and really didn’t want to do it at all. At the end of our trip, we ran out of steam and didn’t post journals for Florence, but we did post pics. As the Digital Mom knows, sometimes you have to force yourself to write, and your efforts are rewarded. I didn’t realize until we got back how many people were following our journey. On previous travels, I felt disconnected from home, but this allowed me to stay connected with friends and family. Now if I could just get those pictures printed out..
I guess that’s why I don’t see a “travel journal” working for me, at least in an instantaneous way. I can’t imagine I’d find many places with wireless capabilities (especially for me, going to Medjugorje…I suppose my parents would have an easier time with that in Rome). I do plan on taking pictures and keeping a journal, but even with the itouch I’d need a wireless connection….hmm…maybe I’ll come up with something that’ll work.
